Elementary Education, Associate of Arts

The Elementary Education program at WNCC is designed for transfer to a four-year institution, so you can obtain your bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Once you have a four-year degree, you will be eligible to become a certified K-6 elementary teacher.

Elementary Education requires you to have basic knowledge in all of the primary subject areas, curriculum development, lesson planning, behavioral intervention, and classroom management. You’ll be fundamental in teaching the educational processes your young students will use throughout their educational journey. As an elementary school teacher, you will be active for most of your day, often on your feet, talking with your class, providing lessons in multiple subject areas, managing disorderly students respectfully, communicating clearly, and empowering each and everyone of your students to let their talents shine. While time management is essential, flexibility and creativity are important to keep children engaged and participative. Nine months of the year you will work long days teaching your class, talking with parents, answering emails, and attending administrative meetings, and you’ll have summers off that are usually unpaid. Working with children requires patience and persistence, but it’s as rewarding as it is challenging helping children develop the necessary academic and social skills they will carry with them the rest of their life.
