We offer our services to anyone who has or is currently serving in the military, their spouses, and their dependents

Certification Site. Our offices serve as a certification site for Veterans Administration educational benefits including:

• Montgomery GI Bill®, (Chapter 30)
• Vocational rehabilitation, (Chapter 31)
• Post 9/11 GI Bill®, (Chapter 33)
• Dependent's benefits, (Chapter 35)
• National Guard and Reservists, (1606)
• MyCAA program for spouses

Refresher courses. Mentorship in math, writing, reading, computer, study skills, and other assistance in preparing for college.

Financing. Assistance in securing VA education benefits and scholarships.

Career advising. Guidance in exploring career choices including specific job outlooks, training, and skill requirements.

Referrals. Information regarding VA work study, vocational rehabilitation, health services, and VA medical centers.

Activities. Participation in Veterans Day parades, workshops, college visits, frequent social gatherings, and open invitation to join the Student Veterans Organization.

Veterans Benefits
If you are a new student who is eligible for Educational Services through the VA, either through your own prior service or that of a family member, please contact our TRIO Veterans Upward Bound program and the Military and Veterans Affairs Office for more information on educational services available for veterans at WNCC. 

Some of our services include: assistance with applying for benefits and completing the FAFSA and scholarship opportunities, in addition to academic and career advising.

Standards of Progress Policy

A veteran and/or eligible person must make satisfactory progress toward an approved educational objective leading to employment. Veteran and/or eligible person Standard of Progress will be determined utilizing the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy as listed in the college catalog consisting of overall grade point average, pace, program length, maximum time for completion, attendance and/or conduct.

 

“Consistent with the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018, Section 3679 of title 38, United States Code, Section 103, Western Nebraska Community College will not impose any penalties due to the delayed disbursement of a payment by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs on recipients of Chapter 31 and Chapter 33 VA Benefits.  Western Nebraska Community College will permit any covered individual to attend or participate in the course of education during the period beginning on the date on which the individual provides Western Nebraska Community College a certificate of eligibility for entitlement to educational assistance under chapter 31 or 33, and ending on the earlier of the following dates: 1) The date on which payment from the VA is made to the institution or 2) 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition and fees following the receipt of the COE (Certificate of Eligibility). Additionally, Western Nebraska Community College will not require that a covered individual borrow additional funds, on any covered individual because of the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to Western Nebraska Community College due to the delayed disbursement of funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs under chapter 31 or 33.  A Covered Individual is any individual who is entitled to educational assistance under chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation, or chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefits, and has been verified by the school certifying official as benefit eligible.  This requirement is limited to the portion of funds paid by VA.”

Qualified individuals must have:

• A limited income or be a first-generation college student (neither parent earned a four-year college degree)
• At least 181 days of active military service
• Not been dishonorably discharged
• Any military related disability

It depends on the education benefits you choose. If you are a new applicant for Post 9/11 benefit, the tuition and fees will be sent directly to the school two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. At that point in time, you should receive your book stipend. The monthly housing allowance and Montgomery GI Bill® payments should arrive within the first few days of the month after classes have started. We recommend you select the automatic deposit so you will receive your money sooner and more efficiently.

Yes. You must contact us as soon as you are ready to enroll. The sooner the better. You should do this as soon as the class schedules are available. Come in to the office or call us to let us know you have enrolled in classes. We will have to approve your selection of courses to assure the VA that these classes fit into your program of study.

Joint Services Transcript is an academically accepted document approved by the American Council on Education (ACE) to validate a service member's military occupational experience and training along with the corresponding ACE college credit recommendations. You can find your military transcript at https://jst.doded.mil/smart/signIn.do, or our office staff will assist you in obtaining it.

Veterans can receive VA Education benefits and federal student aid depending on eligibility as determined on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Veteran's education benefits are recorded on the FAFSA as resources, but NOT as income, and are not used in calculating a student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC). A student's Chapter benefits are not considered a resource and are not counted against most need-based aid. Therefore, these veterans may be eligible for Pell grant and subsidized loans, depending on other eligibility requirements. Contact our Financial Aid Office for more information.
