About the Program

If you want a career in visual arts, such as drawing, graphics design, painting, or sculpture, WNCC’s Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) in Visual Arts will ensure you never go a day without building your artistic portfolio. Discover the theories and histories of visual arts, what distracts or pleases the eye, how different techniques enrich or confuse a piece, and so many other methods and strategies to create and actualize what you have imagined.

WNCC’s AFA in Visual Arts is centered on you having an interactive learning experience which is what makes our program so compelling. Our talented instructors will give you a strong background in the fundamental concepts and methods used in art, as well as the practical training and discipline you will need to make this your career.

By the time you successfully gradate WNCC’s program, you will have the skills you need, as well as a robust repertoire of your own artwork, to start a career of your own or pursue a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution in the visual art of your choice.

Career Opportunities

The WNCC AFA degree in Visual Arts will give you the applied knowledge of your chosen art form and development of your skills to ready you to transfer to a four-year institution. Obtaining a degree in Visual Arts will sharpen your skills, enlighten your technique with core principles, and bring innovative and critical-thinking skills to your art to sustain your creativity.

Depending on your skill set, there are many different careers you can choose from within each field. For example, in fine arts, beyond being an artist, you can specialize in printmaking, special effects makeup, becoming an architectural illustrator, art director, book illustrator, tattoo artist, or storyboard illustrator, to name a few.

Some of the professions from learning three-dimensional art include being a jeweller, weaver, fashion designer, glass artist, prop designer, packaging designer, stained glass window designer, wood carver, and food product designer. In digital designs, some additional careers to graphic design are typographer, sign designer, cell phone app designer, digital 3-D modeler, film editor, logo/branding creator, among so many others.

Photography has several industries to specialize in such as wedding, advertising, food, and fashion. You can write about art as an art critic, historian or blogger. You can choose to teach art or help others through art therapy. And, if you have a spatial mind, there are several more careers in areas such as museum curator, landscape architect, exhibition designer, floral arranger, food stylist, and more. These careers are just the tip of the brush, so make sure to explore all of the options available in your chosen field to choose the one you’re most drawn to.
