Being a Medical Technician involves working with human body fluids that were taken from a patient by a Medical Laboratory Technician and analyzing them to see if there are any bacteria or diseases present to assist the physician in diagnosing the patient. About the Program

Program Objectives

Provide students with the necessary information and credit to transfer directly to a school of medical technology that has a two-year pre-professional requirement.
Provide the first two years of study for programs that require more than two years of pre-professional study for admission to a school of medical technology.
Provide coursework basic to a variety of curricula. Students can change their educational goals to other areas, especially in the life sciences, with little or no lost time.

Career Opportunities

Graduating from WNCC’s Pre Medical Technology program will allow you to continue your education at a four-year college or university in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science, and eventually pursue a graduate degree in Medical Technology.

The basis for this career path is working in a medical laboratory environment, evaluating data, performing scientific tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and working with physicians to further the research. Today’s medical technicians also help research and create new, complex medical instruments for surgeons and research labs, and review common technical procedures to discover more efficient methods. As a med tech, you’ll have a range of career options on which to focus, such as being a cytotechnologist, histotechnologist, pathologist assistant, and natural science manager, to name a few.

In a lab setting, you will be on your feet one day, at a desk or microscope another day, analyzing data, and often completing repetitive tasks looking for outliers. While the days are often routine, you will always be working with a new set of circumstances requiring you to be detail-oriented and focused. If you enjoy problem-solving and can get absorbed in the specifics, these fulfilling careers will keep you on the move while you help discover medicine’s next innovations.
